About the event

Speaker: Dan Cooper, Fairfield, Ohio

Topic: “Apex” the Dinosaur

In May 2022, Jason Cooper, a commercial paleontologist, went for a walk around his property near the aptly named Colorado town of Dinosaur with a friend and found a bit of femur protruding from some rock.

That femur led to a stegosaurus fossil, among the largest and most complete ever found, which has subsequently been nicknamed “Apex.” “Apex” is a fossilized specimen of an unknown species in the genus Stegosaurus. Jason Cooper is the son of speaker, Dan Cooper. In 2024 Sotheby’s auction house sold the specimen for $45 million to billionaire Kenneth Griffin making it the highest-priced fossil ever sold at auction. The sale sparked debate among paleontologists regarding the purchase by private individuals of specimens with high scientific value.

In December 2024, Mr. Griffin loaned the fossil to the American Museum of Natural History, and is on exhibit there…
