About the event

The meeting features an illustrated program by Cincinnati Mineral Society member Terry Huizing about the quarry operations in North Vernon, Indiana. When the Huizings moved to Cincinnati in the early 1960s, this was one of the first Cincinnati Mineral Society sponsored field trips they attended. Magnificent calcite crystals were easily found during that period. These were the days when quarries were locally owned, and permissions to collect were readily granted. Many other field trips to this, and other, nearby Indiana quarries, continued to add beautiful specimens to Terry Huizing’s collection. The presentation will also feature attractive specimens from the collections of Harris Precht, Richard Reiter, and Michael Marino. You may have some North Vernon calcites in your own collection, as they were relatively abundant and remain available for sale in regional mineral markets.

Terry Huizing prepared for Rocks & Minerals magazine, an article about the 150 –year history of the North Vernon locality (in press). While researching the subject, he discovered a mineral misidentification. Come, listen, watch and learn about the discovery.

This program is fit for all ages.
