About the event
Speaker: Danny Settles
Topic: Iridescent Minerals of Kentucky
Such an intriguing subject – imagine minerals that show rainbow-like luminous surface colors and change color with position of the light. And better yet, these minerals can be collected in Kentucky!
Kentucky has several minerals that can be iridescent, including peacock coal, pyrite, calcite, chalcopyrite, and agate
Speaker, Danny Settles comes from a family of mineral collectors who have been active in Kentucky. Father and brothers have frequented the local Danville quarry from the1960s; in the 1970s they discovered the location of the black and red “Kentucky agates”; and in the 1980s they became involved with the state legislature to have these agates named the state (rock), later changed to state mineral.
Danny’s interest turned to microminerals, and that’s when he noticed iridescence. This was not meant to become a collection, but when you collect things, it happens.
