About the event

In celebration of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, CMS member Mr. Johan Maertens invites you to an engaging audio-visual presentation that blends history, science, and visual wonder.

Using the iconic red, white, and blue of the American flag as a thematic guide, he explores how these colors naturally emerge from the mineral world—and what they reveal about our region’s geological heritage.

At the center of the program is celestine, one of the most characteristic and accessible minerals of the greater Ohio region.

Mr. Maertens traces its mineralogical, crystallographic, and color origins, weaving a compelling “heaven and hell” narrative that brings red, white, and blue to life through science.

Attendees can learn where celestine occurs, how its crystals form, and why it has held commercial and scientific importance.

This presentation offers a tour of Ohio’s earth science legacy, highlighting how local geology connects to broader national themes.
